About product

The light cruiser Tama as she appeared in 1944, 1:700 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of a warship in the 1:700 ship scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The name narrows down the subject twice: by the year 1944 and by the reference to Operation Sho Ichigo, the Japanese plan for the defense of the Philippines in the autumn of 1944. The model therefore does not capture the ship in general but her particular late appearance. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the way the hull is divided are stated on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

Tama was one of the Kuma class light cruisers, which the Imperial Japanese Navy brought into service back in the interwar period. They were slender ships with high speed, medium-caliber gun armament in single mountings and torpedo armament, originally intended to lead destroyer squadrons. In the course of the war the ship went, like the other units of her generation, through a strengthening of the anti-aircraft armament and the addition of radar equipment. Tama served among other places in northern waters and was lost in the autumn of 1944 during the Philippine operation. Her appearance in 1944 therefore differs noticeably from her original interwar state.

Building and painting tips

First decide between a stand and a water surface, because that will determine how the hull is prepared. Apply the base shade with an airbrush, set the deck areas apart and then even the whole thing out with a dark wash that pulls out the engraved lines. The strengthened anti-aircraft armament is the most conspicuous detail of the late appearances, so bring it out with a dry brush. Glue the thinnest parts, such as the masts, the antennas and the gun barrels, with cyanoacrylate glue. Photo-etched railings and ladders are among the accessories that transform the overall impression the most at this scale.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Japanese light cruisers in 1:700 scale.
  • For modelers who build a particular late appearance of a ship.
  • For builders who like to add photo-etch and to build a water surface.
  • For intermediate modelers who can handle work with small parts.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
