The DH.60 Moth line is among the most widespread light biplanes of the interwar period. It was a two-seat machine with a wooden frame, fabric covering and folding wings, which served flying clubs, flying schools and smaller air forces as a trainer and liaison type. The version designated X differed in a reworked undercarriage that stood up better to operation from unpaved surfaces. In New Zealand, machines of the Moth line formed the basis of training for the first generation of military pilots, and operating them from water made sense in a country with a long coastline and a number of lakes. The float version meant exchanging the wheeled undercarriage for a pair of floats, and with it slightly different flying characteristics — a longer take-off run and more sensitive handling on the water.
Finish the cockpit interiors first and only then close the fuselage. Seat the upper wing with the help of a simple jig that will hold the right angle and height until the struts set. Attach the floats at the very end and check them from the front and from the side, so that they stand parallel. Glue with thin cement for polystyrene, and small fittings with cyanoacrylate. Before the decals, cover the surface with a gloss varnish compatible with the paint used; once it has dried, even it out with a semi-matte or matte varnish, which looks more convincing on fabric covering than a high gloss. Rig the bracing wires at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
