An accessory for modelers, not a kit of the aircraft. The set holds wheels cast in resin that replace the original plastic landing gear parts on the model. A resin casting renders the texture of the tire and the shape of the hub more crisply than an injection mold, and it has no parting seam of the kind that has to be laboriously sanded away on plastic wheels. The accessory is supplied by the SBS Model brand.
The De Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth is a British trainer biplane of the 1930s on which whole generations of pilots learned to fly. The DH.82A version was the most widespread production form. The machine has fixed landing gear with a tail skid and open cockpits in tandem; the wheels are clearly visible on the model because nothing covers them, so the way they are made carries unexpectedly great weight in the final impression. The type still flies in civilian hands today and is one of the best loved historic aircraft of all.
First wash the resin parts in warm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw; on wheels the block is usually placed where the tire meets the ground, so the cut can be used elegantly to suggest the tire sitting down. Sand the remains down with respiratory protection, ideally wet. It is glued with cyanoacrylate; polystyrene cement has no effect on resin. Apply a primer before painting; do not spray the tires pure black, as a dark gray shade looks more faithful in scale.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. The set is cut for one particular kit, so please check the fit with yours before buying.
