Pmask 1:48 Dornier Do 215 B-4, a masking set

A Pmask masking set in 1:48 scale for a model of the German twin-engine Dornier Do 215 B-4. It is an accessory for painting rather than a kit: the masks are cut to the shape of the clear parts of the ICM 48241 kit. On this type the glazed nose is extensive and full of narrow frames, and this is exactly where masking by hand with tape takes the most time and most often goes wrong.

Use

• Before masking, wash the clear parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry in the open air.
• Lift the masks with tweezers and lay them one at a time, starting with the larger areas.
• Press the edges down with a blunt tip all the way round, otherwise paint will creep into the corners of the frames.
• Spray the frames with the interior shade first and only then with the outer covering shade.
• Remove the masks shortly after the finish has dried, pulling across the edge.

The real subject

The Do 215 was a German twin-engine aircraft derived from the earlier Do 17 and powered by inverted V12 engines. The B-4 version was fitted with photographic equipment and was used for reconnaissance duties. The total number of aircraft built stayed low compared with its more widespread predecessor, which makes the type an interesting subject. Its characteristic feature remained the heavily glazed front of the fuselage with a shared space for the crew.
