A set of machine-cut vinyl masks in 1:48 scale for models of the Douglas Skywarrior carrier aircraft. It is not a kit, but an accessory used during painting. The vinyl film is elastic and self-adhesive, holds even in the corners of recessed windows and leaves no adhesive behind when removed. Furball Aero-Design is an American maker of accessories specializing in the aircraft of the US Navy.
The Skywarrior was a twin-engine jet that was among the largest and heaviest machines regularly operating from the decks of American aircraft carriers. It originated as a heavy carrier bomber, but its roomy fuselage and long range made it an ideal basis for later conversions — it flew as an aerial tanker, an electronic warfare aircraft and a reconnaissance and training machine. The cockpit with its several separate windows and the glazing in the forward fuselage is typical of the model and the most demanding part to paint.
Large glazed areas are masked differently from a small fighter canopy. Apply the cut perimeter masks to the frames and fill the centers of the areas with an offcut of masking tape or with liquid — you will save material and prevent dust being held under a large area of mask. Degrease the glazing before applying them and check that no grease from your fingers is left on it, or the film will not hold. Press the edges down with a blunt toothpick. Spray in thin coats at a right angle to the edge and take the mask off shortly after the paint has set. If you polish the model, do it only after the masks are off.
This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
