About product

Photo-etched set 1:48 Douglas B-26B-50 Invader — bomb bay (Eduard)

This is an add-on set of photo-etched metal in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard, aimed at the detail of the bomb bay of the Douglas B-26B-50 Invader attack bomber. The set is not a kit and not a model: it assumes you already have the base plastic kit, and it replaces or supplements its simplified shapes. At a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter, photo-etch can render the ribbing, racks, conduits and perforated panels that for technological reasons cannot be molded into injected plastic.

The real subject

The Douglas Invader was a twin-engine all-metal attack bomber with Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines. The version with what is called the solid nose carried fixed gun armament and its bomb load in an internal bomb bay. After the reorganization of American designations at the end of the 1940s the type was carried under the designation B-26, and in that form it served long after the Second World War, among other places in Korea and in Southeast Asia. An open bomb bay is one of the most closely watched places on a model, because you can see into the fuselage through it.

Building tips

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, not by twisting. Bend the long straight bomb bay parts in a photo-etch bending tool, or at least between two razor blades, so that the edge is sharp and free of rippling. Degrease the brass with alcohol before gluing and apply a thin coat of primer, or the paint will not hold. Meter the superglue with the tip of a wire, not straight from the bottle. Assemble and paint the bomb bay before you close the fuselage up, and we recommend bringing the interior out at the end with a dark wash that runs into the ribbing.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build the model with the bomb bay open
  • Builders with experience of working with photo-etched parts
  • Those interested in American equipment of the 1940s and 1950s
  • Competition modelers who are after depth of detail

The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set intended for a kit you already own in 1:48 scale. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

The set concentrates on the bomb bay, that is on the ribbing, racks, conduits and perforated panels. The exact number of parts is given in the instructions supplied with the set.

A sharp scalpel, a hard surface, tweezers, superglue and ideally a photo-etch bending tool for the long straight parts.

Degrease it with alcohol and spray it with a thin primer. On bare brass, paint holds badly without a base and peels off when handled.
