About product

Douglas B-26C Invader bomb bay 1:48, a full Eduard photo-etched set

This set belongs to Eduard's range of unpainted brass photo-etched parts in 1:48 scale. It differs from the pre-painted Zoom and Look ranges in that the parts are not printed and are painted only once on the model, which gives freedom in the choice of the interior shade. It is aimed at the bomb bay of the twin-engine Invader, that is at a space that is clearly visible on a finished model once the doors are open. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory for a plastic kit.

The real subject

The Douglas A-26 Invader, designated B-26 from 1948, was an American twin-engine attack and light bomber aircraft with radial engines. The C version had a glazed nose with a bombardier's station, unlike the B version with a solid nose fitted with machine guns. The inside of the bomb bay was made up of a tubular truss structure with beams, hangers and runs of lines, that is precisely the kind of thin-walled detail that injection-molded plastic can reproduce only in a simplified way.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Photo-etched parts are used precisely because brass foil a few tenths of a millimeter thick reads in scale like real sheet metal, whereas a plastic part would have to be several times thicker. Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface; do not break them out. Make longer folds in a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is straight and sharp. Stiff parts that are meant to be rolled into a curve can be annealed by drawing the brass briefly over a flame, and once cool they are markedly more pliable. Degrease the parts with alcohol before gluing and do not touch them with your fingers after that. They are glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin; on larger areas a gel variant with a longer time for positioning helps. Always back metal with a primer, as otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth brass.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Invader in 1:48 scale with the bomb bay open
  • more experienced builders who have already worked with photo-etched parts
  • anyone interested in interior detail without using resin
  • builds for a display case and for competitions, where open sections are judged

This is an add-on set, not a stand-alone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory aimed at the bomb bay, which is built into an already purchased plastic kit in 1:48 scale.

No. This range is supplied in bare brass. Pre-painted parts are offered by other Eduard ranges, for instance Zoom or Look.

Best of all with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin. Before painting, degrease the metal and spray it with a primer, as otherwise the paint will not hold.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers and a photo-etch bender will do. Without a bender, longer folds can be made between two blades.
