About product

The hydraulics of the F-111 spine in 1:48 scale, a Black Dog resin set

An important note right at the start: it is not a model of an airplane. This item is a detail set made of resin, which supplements an F-111 aircraft kit in 1:48 scale that has already been bought and replaces or supplements the internal fittings of the spine of the fuselage. It makes sense when you want to display the model with the service panels on the spine open and show what is hidden beneath them; with the panels closed, nothing of the set will be visible.

What the set is for

The spine of the F-111 fuselage conceals the routing of the hydraulic circuits and the associated installation; on large aircraft with a variable-geometry wing it is a technically conspicuous assembly, which on a finished model with the panels open becomes the main draw for a viewer. A resin casting can present this space with a sharpness an injection mold cannot reach, because it does not have to solve the removability of the parts from the mold. For a modeler that means above all work with small parts and with painting in depth, where you have to go in the right order: first paint the assembly, then put it together.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts with lukewarm water and detergent, so that residues of release agent are removed and the paint holds. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc; do not break them; when sanding, work wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Always try the dry seating into the kit first, because a resin part usually calls for sanding away part of the original plastic; sand in small steps and keep trying it. It pays to paint in parts before assembly: a primer, then a dark wash in the recesses and at the end a dry brush on the edges and fine traces of oil and abrasion. Check the compatibility with your own kit beforehand, because sets of this type tend to be cut for a particular tooling.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to display a model with the service panels open
  • Experienced builders with experience of resin
  • Anyone interested in maximum detail in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers building a display version with assemblies exposed

The set is an accessory to a kit already bought and is supplied unpainted. The kit, cyanoacrylate glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a detail accessory made of resin for an F-111 kit in 1:48 scale that has already been bought. The aircraft itself is not in the package.

Only if you build the model with the service panels on the spine open. With the panels closed the set will stay hidden.

Cyanoacrylate glue, ideally gel. Ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin.

Sets of this type tend to be cut for a particular tooling, so check the compatibility with your own kit beforehand.
