About product

Gee Bee R2 in its 1933 form, 1:48 scale, A&A Models

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Gee Bee Model R-2 Super Sportster racing aircraft. The reference to 1933 in the name points to the later build state of the machine, that is to its condition after modifications, not to the aircraft of its debut season. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The exact package contents and the number of decal schemes are stated on the packaging of the product.

The real subject

The Gee Bee Model R was created at the start of the 1930s as a pure racing special. It is typified by a short barrel-shaped fuselage, a powerful radial engine at the front and a cockpit set far back, right in front of the tail surfaces. Of the two machines built, the R-2 was the variant with a greater wingspan, a less powerful engine and a larger fuel load, that is a machine built more for cross-country races over longer distances than for a short closed circuit. Both aircraft were held to be extraordinarily demanding to fly, because the whole design was subordinated to speed and not to handling. During their short careers they went through modifications that changed both the length of the fuselage and the internal layout.

Building and painting tips

The key to a good result is a symmetrical seating of the engine and the cowling, because it is that bulk that forms the characteristic silhouette of the real subject. Paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage and mask the glazing. A glossy racing finish calls for a carefully smoothed and primed surface, because gloss emphasizes every scratch. Apply the paint in thin coats with an airbrush, use gloss varnish under the decals, and preferably leave the finished model in the sheen that matches period racing machines.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of interwar racing and record-breaking aircraft in 1:48.
  • For modelers who want to try glossy single-color and two-color finishes.
  • For builders of display cases devoted to the golden age of air racing in the 1930s.
  • For completing the R-1 and R-2 pair in a collection.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It points to the later build state of the aircraft, that is to its condition after modifications, not to the machine's first racing season.

The R-2 had a greater wingspan, a less powerful engine and a larger fuel load, and it was intended more for cross-country races. The R-1 was shorter and more powerful, built for fast closed circuits.

Rather not. A glossy surface and a symmetrical seating of the engine cowling call for experience with surface preparation and an airbrush.

The number of schemes is stated on the packaging of the product.
