A plastic kit of the iconic racing aircraft of the early 1930s. The Ukrainian maker Dora Wings has made its name with kits of interwar, racing and less usual aircraft with fine engraving and rich detail. This release captures the machine in its early 1932 form.
The Super Sportster R-1 was built by the Granville brothers as a thoroughbred racing special: the short barrel-like fuselage is wrapped literally around a Pratt and Whitney Wasp radial engine, and the cockpit is pushed back almost as far as the vertical tail. In 1932 James Doolittle won the prestigious Thompson Trophy race with it and also set a landplane speed record. The machine was famous for its high speed but also for its treacherous handling, and to this day it remains one of the greatest icons of American aviation history.
Pick out the cylinders of the radial engine with a dark wash and a dry brush. With the typical red and white finish it pays to spray the light shade first, mask the curves and then add the red; a smooth gloss surface will underline the racing character of the machine. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat. The model is small in size, so glue the tiny landing gear parts with tweezers.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
