About product

Photo-etched turret skirts for the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H and J early – 1:48, Aber

A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale, listed as the additional set vol. 3 with a focus on the turret skirts. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory for a plastic model of the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. H version or the early Ausf. J form that you have already bought. The metal parts capture the thin-walled sheet skirts around the turret as they looked on the real vehicle, that is noticeably finer than injection-molded plastic can manage.

The real subject

The turret armor skirts, known at the time as Schürzen, appeared on the Pz.Kpfw. IV during 1943. Thin sheet screens hung around the turret and along the sides of the hull were to break up shaped-charge rounds from anti-tank rifles and anti-tank launchers before they reached the armor itself. The turret skirts formed a ring with hinged doors at the rear of the turret. In practice they were often taken off or knocked away in combat, so vehicles of the same version looked very different.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard mat and make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue, and on load-bearing hangers low-melt solder helps as well. With skirts it pays not to shy away from realistic damage: a slightly bent, torn or entirely missing part looks more convincing than a perfect ring. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal; only then apply the base shade and the weathering.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H and early J in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the thickness of plastic turret skirts
  • Anyone interested in a realistic rendering of damaged or missing screens
  • Advanced modelers used to working with photo-etch

This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Thin sheet screens hung around the turret, known at the time as Schürzen. They were to break up shaped-charge rounds before they reached the armor.

No. It is a photo-etched metal accessory to a plastic kit of the Pz.Kpfw. IV tank in 1:48 scale.

Best in a photo-etch bending tool. Without one, two razor blades and a flat mat will do; run the bend along the scored line.

Yes, that is one of the main advantages of metal. The parts can be bent, torn or some of them left out altogether.
