Cut masks for building the Hawk T Mk.1 trainer in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for the painting stage. The masks are stuck onto the glazing and other areas that are meant to stay free of paint and are taken off once it has been sprayed. The shapes are cut in advance, so you do not have to struggle with measuring tape out and trimming it with a scalpel on the model.
The Hawk is a British single-engine subsonic trainer with a two-seat tandem cockpit and a low-set swept wing. The T Mk.1 version serves for training pilots. From a modeler's point of view that tandem cockpit is the defining feature: the canopy is long, made up of a separate windshield and a sizable hinged section over both seats, so the glazed areas take up a substantial part of the upper side of the fuselage.
The larger the glazed area, the longer the edge and the more opportunities for paint to bleed. On the Hawk the framing is also rather subtle, so the mask has to sit exactly on the engraved line, or the frame comes out looking either too thick or cut short. Work piece by piece: settle each one dry, check its position against the engraving, press it with a blunt stick all the way round, and only then move on to the next. Before you lay the target shade on, spray the edge with a thin coat of base or clear paint, which closes the gap and leaves any seepage colorless. With the strong overall shades used on trainers it pays to spray from lighter to darker and in thin coats, otherwise a noticeable step forms on the edge.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Check the extent of the set against the manufacturer's details before you buy.
