About product

MH models 1:48 Hawker Tempest Mk.II - masks for the British national insignia

A set of self-adhesive masking templates in 1:48 scale intended for spraying the British roundels on a model of the Hawker Tempest Mk.II fighter. It is neither a kit nor a set of decals: it is an accessory thanks to which the insignia are painted straight onto the surface of the model. The result has no glossy film and no edge of carrier film, so the insignia look like part of the finish and there is no problem with a decal silvering on a matte coat. The masks are cut for the Special Hobby kit.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest Mk.II was the version of the British Tempest fighter powered by a twin-row air-cooled radial engine, unlike the more widespread variant with the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-block engine. Its external recognition feature is therefore the short, solid nose without the under-fuselage radiator. The aircraft had a laminar-flow wing with a thin section and was among the fastest British piston fighters of its day. It entered service in production form only after the fighting in Europe had ended.

Usage tips

The base must be smooth, degreased and fully cured. Transfer the mask with tweezers, press it down and work the edges in with a toothpick. Spray the white or light element of the insignia first and only then the darker shades, as the coverage is better that way. Apply the paint in several very thin coats, perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it cannot creep underneath. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has flashed off.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who prefer sprayed markings to decals
  • Builders of British piston fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Those who struggle with decals silvering on a matte surface
  • Those interested in a more convincing finish even under heavy weathering

The masks are an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not included in the package. Paints and glue are not supplied. The masks are cut for a particular kit in this scale, so please check that they match your own kit before buying.

FAQ

They are not. These are masking templates: the insignia are sprayed with paint. That is the main difference from a decal sheet.

A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it does not silver on a matte surface, leaves no step at the edge and stands up to weathering better.

The masks are made for a particular kit of the given type and scale. Please check that they match the one you are building before buying.

It had a twin-row air-cooled radial engine instead of the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-block engine, so it has a short, solid nose without the under-fuselage radiator.
