About product

AMP 1:48 Hiller YH-32 — plastic kit of an experimental helicopter

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental helicopter Hiller YH-32 Hornet in 1:48 scale from the brand AMP. It is a short-run kit supplemented by photo-etched parts, clear parts and masking templates; the package also holds decals for several marking options. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Given the tiny dimensions of the subject the finished model is small, but it is very distinctive in design.

The real subject

The Hiller YH-32 Hornet was an ultralight helicopter of the early 1950s. Its peculiarity was the propulsion: instead of a conventional engine with a transmission it carried a pair of tiny ramjets at the tips of the rotor blades, which spun the rotor directly. That did away with the complicated drive train and with a tail rotor in the usual sense. The solution was elegant on paper, but in practice it ran into enormous noise, a miserable range and flames at the blade tips that were clearly visible at night. Only a few dozen machines were built and the type never reached regular service.

Building and painting tips

Count on this being a short-run kit — the parts have thicker attachment points to the sprue and the joints are finished by sanding, so always dry-fit the parts first. The open truss structure of the fuselage calls for careful gluing and is best assembled in sections on a flat surface. The rotor blades with the engines at their tips are fragile, so fit them at the very end. Painting is rewarding: either military olive with clear wear, or a striking civil finish according to the enclosed schemes.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of helicopters and experimental hardware
  • Modelers who enjoy unusual design solutions
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits
  • Anyone interested in American aviation of the 1950s

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

By a pair of tiny ramjets placed directly at the tips of the rotor blades. That did away with the transmission and with the usual way of countering torque.

Because of extreme noise, a very small range and the flames at the blade tips, which gave the machine away at night over a great distance.

Photo-etched parts, clear parts, masking templates and decals for several marking options.

Rather not. It is a short-run kit where the parts have to be dry-fitted and the joints finished by sanding.
