With fixed-wing subjects quarter scale is often a compromise; with rotorcraft it is frequently the best answer. Helicopters are bulkier than fighters, so even the half scale leaves room for open cabins, engines moulded in the round and visible armament. A finished Apache measures around 30 cm — a display piece that does not claim a whole shelf. New tooling appears here more often than anywhere else, which is why the modern line-up is freshest in this scale.
Followers of the Czech Air Force have the AH-1Z Viper in home markings; special-operations subjects run to assault-team boxings with the MH-6J and figures. Collectors of the early years can go back to the machines of the fifties.
Boxings differ: some add crew figures, others photo-etched fretwork or a choice of several markings. A better-equipped boxing spares you hunting those pieces down separately later.
The greenhouse of a Huey or a Little Bird is a masking job in itself — film cut for one specific kit saves hours of trimming tape, and keeps the frame lines straight where tape would wander. Fit the clear parts dry first: quarter-scale transparencies are large enough that a poor fit shows as a step along the fuselage spine.
Quarter scale is the point at which a cockpit stops being a suggestion and becomes a small model in its own right. Allow a session for the interior alone, close the fuselage only when you are happy with it, and the finished machine will stand up to being looked into rather than merely looked at.
