About product

JB-2 Loon — the American version of the V-1, 1:48 (MPM)

A kit of the American unmanned JB-2 Loon guided missile in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer MPM. It is not a crewed aircraft but a single-use unmanned device powered by a pulsejet engine — the model is therefore small, with a low number of parts, and suits either a separate exhibit on a base or an addition to a diorama with a test site.

The real subject

The German Fi 103, known to the public as the V-1, was the first guided missile used in series. After the wreckage was captured in 1944 the Americans copied the design in a surprisingly short time and started their own production under the designation JB-2; the navy used the name Loon for its version. The missile was to be used against Japan, but it never came to combat use. Instead an extensive test program followed — launches from ground ramps, from the decks of ships and from a submarine, and drops from carrier aircraft. The experience from this program became one of the starting points of postwar American guided missile development.

Building and painting tips

Reckon with the short-run technology typical of this manufacturer: thicker sprue gates, fine flash on the parting line and no locating pins. So try the parts dry before gluing, sand the mating surfaces down and rather fill the joints. The body is largely a smooth form, so it pays to sand and polish it properly after filling — every scratch will show once sprayed. The color scheme on these machines tends to be simple and single-color, so the result will be decided by the smoothness of the surface and discreet emphasis of the panel lines. The model looks good on a simple base or on a suggested section of a launch ramp.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of missiles and unmanned vehicles
  • Modelers who want a small supplementary exhibit alongside larger aircraft in 1:48
  • Anyone interested in the beginnings of guided missiles and American test programs
  • Builders who do not mind fitting parts on a short-run kit

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

At heart it was an American copy made from the captured wreckage, so in shape the two missiles are very close. The differences were mainly in the production technology and in the equipment connected with the American test program.

It never came to combat use. The missile was being prepared against Japan, but the war ended sooner, and the JB-2 therefore served above all for trials.

In extent, yes — there are few parts. Short-run technology does call for patience with fitting and filling, though, so a complete newcomer should reckon with a slower pace.
