A photo-etched set of parts for a model of the Lockheed F-104S Starfighter in 1:48 scale. Thin sheet metal replaces the details that are hard to render in plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is among the most striking supersonic aircraft of its day: a slender fuselage, a very short trapezoidal wing and a high-set tail surface. The F-104S version is one of the late links in the whole family. It is precisely the clean shaping of the subject that makes the model a rewarding target for added small parts, because on a smooth surface every detail added is visible.
It is a photo-etched set for a kit in 1:48 scale. Photo-etched parts come about by chemically etching the outline into thin sheet metal, so they have precise edges and a thickness that injection-molded plastic cannot reach. Check the makeup of the parts and the kit the set is cut for in the manufacturer's data before buying.
The parts are held in the fret by thin tabs. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, never by breaking them out, and sand the remains of the tab down carefully. For the folds use a bender or two straight edges, so that the fold is crisp along its whole length. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue in a minute amount, applied with a pin. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and spray a base color, otherwise the coat rubs off the smooth surface.
The set suits modelers who want to bring out the places on a finished model where plastic is inevitably thicker than real sheet metal. Working with photo-etch calls for tweezers, calm and good light. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
