A set of machine-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:48 scale for models of the carrier variant F-35C Lightning II. The name of the set gives the cockpit glazing and the wheel hubs. It is not a kit — the set comes into its own only when painting a model under construction, and it leaves no adhesive behind on the transparent parts when removed. Furball Aero-Design is an American maker of accessories focused on the aviation of the US Navy.
The F-35C is the version adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. It has a larger wing area with folding tips, sturdier landing gear and an arrestor hook, which are the modifications needed for a catapult launch and an arrested landing. The larger wing at the same time lowers the landing speed and improves behavior in slow flight. As on the other versions, the surface of the airframe is designed with a low radar signature in mind, so the model is given predominantly matte gray finishes with subtle panel shades.
A matte low-visibility finish has one treacherous property: the edge of the paint shows on it more than on a gloss surface, because no reflection covers it. So spray genuinely thinly, in four passes if need be, and take the mask off as soon as the paint has set. If you want to indicate differing panel shades, do it after unmasking and with very thin paint, so that the transitions stay soft. Degrease the glazing before applying a mask and let it dry; a matte airframe surface will emphasize every speck of dirt caught under the film even more.
This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
