An aftermarket accessory of photo-etched metal meant for the plastic kit of the tank destroyer from Tamiya. The set deals with one particular item, that is, roofing over the open turret, and it does not replace the kit, which you have to own. It is made by the Czech brand Hauler.
The American M10 tank destroyer had an open turret with a five-sided plan. The open top made observation and working the gun easier, but at the same time it left the crew without protection against the splinters of artillery shells bursting in the branches of trees and against hand grenades in fighting in built-up areas. Units therefore fitted roofs of armor plate in the field, worked out in various ways, often hinged or in sections so that access to the turret remained. It is precisely these field modifications that are a rewarding subject for modelers today, because every vehicle looked a little different.
The area of the roof is fairly large for photo-etch, and it therefore pays to anneal the part before shaping, that is, to warm it briefly over a flame and let it cool. The metal softens and bends better without springing. Make straight bends in a bender, and curves over a cylindrical rod or a drill bit of a suitable diameter. Check the fit dry before gluing, and sand any overhang off carefully. Degrease the metal, give it a primer and paint it in the same shade as the vehicle. Traces of use stand out on a roof: paint worn off the edges, dust, and a dry brush on the rivets and the clasps.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not included in the package. It is supplied unpainted; glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
