Photo-etched Marston matting in 1:48 scale from the maker Hauler represents the pierced steel planking with which field airfield surfaces and temporary roads were firmed up during the war.
Responsibility details are not available.
Marston mat is the designation for a pierced steel plank that was laid with its edges interlocked and turned waterlogged terrain into a load-bearing surface. It was used on temporary runways, hardstands, access roads and parking areas. This set from the maker Hauler is photo-etched and serves as material for building the base of a diorama or a display base in 1:48 scale; it is not a model of an aircraft or a vehicle.
The most frequent use is an area beneath an aircraft or a vehicle. The structure of pierced sheet immediately places a model in a specific setting and looks more credible than a smooth board. The set can be combined with sand, gravel and grass, because in reality the matting never covered the whole area and vegetation grew up between the sections. It will also find use as improvised cladding, a walkway or the firming up of a verge.
Photo-etched metal is an advantage here mainly because of its thickness and the open holes, which cannot be imitated credibly in plastic or paper. Cut the parts with a scalpel against a metal surface and level the edges with a fine file. Glue the area to a firm base, best to thin plywood or hard polystyrene, with cyanoacrylate or epoxy over the whole area; gluing at points will lift in time. Painting: degrease, primer, a dark steel base paint and then layers of rust and mud. Pigments and dusting into the holes will do most of the work, because a regular grid in itself looks too clean. A slight curve to the individual sections before gluing looks realistic, whereas a flat area does not.
This is supplementary material for building a scene, not a complete model. The base, glue and paints are not included in the package.
