National insignia masks Do 17 Z-2 1:48 (New Ware)

This set does not deal with the glazing. These are cut self-adhesive masks for spraying the national insignia and markings on a model of the Do 17 Z-2 in 1:48 scale, that is an alternative to the decals from the box. The markings are painted directly into the finish, so they become part of the surface of the model. The masks are cut for the ICM 48244 kit.

Why spray the markings instead of using decals

A decal is always a thin layer above the surface. On a scale model that shows as a faint glossy edge of carrier film and above all on surfaces with raised features and engraving, where a decal does not seat and has to be softened. A sprayed marking does not have that problem, it takes subsequent weathering well and is not damaged when the surface is matted. Another advantage is that you choose the shade of the paint yourself and can match it to a period appearance rather than to the printing of a sheet.

How to proceed

• Spray the markings only onto dry camouflage, ideally after lightly polishing the surface.
• First lay down a light base coat if it is a light marking on a dark base.
• Keep the coats thin. A heavy coat creates an edge you will be able to feel once the mask is off.
• Apply the positive and the negative parts of the mask exactly in register, or the inner drawing of the marking will shift.
• Once finished, spray the whole model with varnish so that the transitions are evened out.

Who the set is for

For modelers who want markings without glossy edges, and for those who weather a model heavily. The work is somewhat slower than with a decal, but the result looks more convincing.

The package holds only the mask set. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package. The set is intended for the technical building of a model.
