Dornier Do 215B-4 1:48 masking set, BASIC level (New Ware)

Self-adhesive cut masks from New Ware for a model of the Dornier Do 215B-4 twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The BASIC level is the entry grade of the line, aimed at the glazing frames and the landing gear wheels. The masks are cut from thin masking tape that is supple enough for curved surfaces and yet firm enough not to stay on the part when it is lifted off. The masks are cut for the ICM 48241 kit.

The material and how to handle it

Thin masking tape of this kind behaves differently from ordinary adhesive tape. The adhesive is weaker, so it will not pull dry paint away, but at the same time it needs a clean, dry surface. It does not hold on a dusty or greasy surface and does not like damp. Leave unused masks on their original backing sheet, stored flat, dry and out of direct light. Stored like this a set stays usable for years, whereas a mask left loose in a box is ruined by dust within a few weeks.

The real subject

The Do 215 was a twin-engine aircraft derived from the Dornier Do 17 and powered by inline engines. The B-4 version served for reconnaissance and carried photographic equipment. The production run was small, so it is a less usual type that was long missing from the modeling range.

Procedure

• Wash the clear parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry freely
• Take the mask off the sheet with sharp tweezers and lay it on without touching the adhesive side
• Press it down all the way round, using a wooden toothpick on the small panels
• Spray in thin coats; a heavy layer creeps under the edge
• Lift the mask off shortly after the paint has become tacky, drawing it back at an angle

For modelers who build less usual twin-engine types and want glazing on them as clean as on the mainstream kits. It also suits those who buy masks in advance and need them to last until the model's turn comes.
