About product

Me 209 V1 record prototype in 1:48 scale (A&A Models)

The kit captures the first Me 209 prototype, an aircraft built with a single aim — to reach the highest possible speed in level flight. The model is in 1:48 scale and, according to the name, offers two finish options. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The number of parts and the contents of the package are given by the instructions for the kit; check the decal sheet and the instructions after unpacking.

The real subject

The Me 209 V1 was a single-seat all-metal low-wing monoplane designed exclusively for a speed record. The design subordinated everything to that: the fuselage was narrowed tightly around the pilot, the canopy was extremely low and engine cooling was handled by an evaporative system with exchangers right in the wing skin, so that the aircraft did not have to carry a drag-producing radiator. The result was an airplane with excellent aerodynamics but unpleasant flying qualities and a very short range. In April 1939 it set the absolute speed record for piston-engine aircraft, which was not beaten for many decades. The machine was unsuited to military use, and later attempts to derive a fighter from it led to markedly reworked, practically different designs.

Building and painting tips

The key to the build is a smooth, aerodynamically clean surface — no untreated seam may show on a record aircraft. Once the glue has dried, therefore, fill the joints of the fuselage and the leading edges and sand them with progressively finer grits, then polish them at the end. Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage; after that you will not get to it. Apply a primer before painting and check the surface again in raking light. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the fine panel lines do not disappear. Apply a gloss clear coat before the decals, and once it is dry move to the degree of gloss you want — on a record aircraft a semi-gloss to gloss surface suits better than a matte one.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in record-breaking and experimental aircraft
  • Collectors of prototypes and single-purpose designs in 1:48 scale
  • Builders who want to try working on a perfectly smooth surface
  • Anyone after two finish options in a single package

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It was a single-purpose record machine with no armament. Attempts to derive a combat aircraft from it led to different, markedly reworked designs.

Two, according to the name of the product. You will find the particular form of both schemes in the instructions supplied with the kit.

Probably not. The main part of the work lies in filling and sanding to a perfectly smooth surface, which calls for patience and some basic experience.

The contents of the package are given by the instructions for the kit. Check the parts list there.
