The set in modeling resin from the maker CMK replaces the control surfaces on a plastic kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109K fighter in 1:48 scale. The castings are separate, so during the build you fit them in a position of your choosing. The set is not a kit; the plastic model is bought separately.
The late version of the Bf 109 has skinned surfaces with pronounced ribbing and fabric covering on the control surfaces, whose sag between the ribs is clearly apparent in 1:48 scale. An injection mold can manage this surface only to a limited extent and the trailing edge tends to be thick; a resin casting can draw the edge out thin and make the structure of the covering more pronounced. The second benefit is the position: a model with the flaps down and the rudder slightly deflected looks like a machine parked on the apron rather than like a molding.
First cut the original surfaces off the plastic parts. Run the cut with a fine saw along the hinge line, along the whole length at once, so that the cut does not break off course. Then level the edge with abrasive paper laid on a flat board, as doing it freehand produces a wave that you will not sand out afterwards. Next comes the dry test: lay the part on without glue and check the gap against the light; with the flaps, also try whether the angle of extension sits the same on both halves of the wing. Wash the castings free of the release agent beforehand, cut the casting blocks off with a saw leaving a margin and sand the remainder down. Cyanoacrylate glue is used, ideally in gel form, which gives a second for leveling up. Sand resin wet or with a respirator.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
