A decal sheet for a model of the Japanese Nakajima B5N2 carrier attack aircraft, listed as the type 97 and known by the Allied code name Kate. The scale is 1:48 and the theme of the sheet is machines from the attack on Pearl Harbor. The extent of the sheet and the placing of each marking is described in the instructions supplied.
The B5N2 is a low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and a crew of three that served from the decks of aircraft carriers. It carried a torpedo or bombs, so one and the same unit could attack ships from low level and also bomb in the conventional way. On December 7, 1941, machines of this type took part in the attack on the base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where it was exactly the torpedo and bombing attacks that caused heavy losses among the anchored ships.
Coat the surface with gloss varnish first, or white blotches will appear under the film. Cut the parts out one at a time with a narrow margin and soak them one by one. After a few seconds in lukewarm water let the part stand until it will slide off the backing, settle it on the dampened area and push the water out with a soft cloth from the center toward the edges. Over rivets and into grooves a decal softener helps the film settle; once it has been applied do not move the part any more. Finally coat the area with varnish.
