Wheels for the V-22 Osprey in 1:48 scale

Replacement wheels for a model of the American V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, made with tires flattened under load. They replace the wheels from the kit and give a standing model the impression that the weight of the machine really does rest on the landing gear. The letter in the name distinguishes the version within the range of the manufacturer; which machines the individual versions match is given in the instructions of the manufacturer.

Why reach for replacement wheels

In plastic kits, wheels tend to be shaped perfectly round and with a fine tread that is often lost in molding. Replacement wheels answer that weakness twice over: the tread is more legible and the tire has a flat spot at the ground of the kind that appears on a loaded wheel. The difference shows above all on a model on a diorama or a base, where the viewer's eye goes straight to the point where it meets the ground.

Building and painting

• always turn the flattened part of the tire toward the ground, otherwise the whole effect is wasted
• wash and degrease the parts before painting
• cut the excess material away a little distance from the part with a sharp blade and sand the surface
• choose the glue according to the material of the parts; cyanoacrylate will serve generally
• a model with flattened tires sits slightly lower, so check that dry before gluing
