Markings 1:48 for two twin-boom Lockheed machines: the late J form with the code MC-O and an early aircraft with a pair of inscriptions on the noses.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet sets two development stages of the same aircraft side by side. The first is the P-38J-15-LO with the number 43-38431, the code MC-O and the inscription Happy Jack of the 79th Fighter Squadron of the 20th Fighter Group, dated to April 1944. The second is a considerably earlier machine of the E or F series with the number 41-7587, the code UN-O and the pair of names Texas Terror and Mad Dash. Between the two lie roughly two years of development and experience.
Lockheed placed both engines in booms ending in tail surfaces and seated the pilot in a short nacelle between them. The armament could thus be concentrated in the nose and fired in parallel, without the converging paths of guns in a wing. The radiators and turbochargers in the booms made the type complicated to maintain, but over the Pacific and over Europe alike they turned it into a long-range escort fighter that could reach where single-engine machines could not.
The personal inscriptions belong on the short nacelle, the code letters by contrast on the engine booms, where the surface is curved in two directions. It is exactly there that it helps to dampen the surface first and to move the design carefully across the water, because the double curvature tightens the film and it breaks easily. Let the drying happen without touching it.
The early series had smaller radiators and a different arrangement of intakes than the late J models, so the kits for the two subjects are not the same. Before buying the plastic, therefore, check which series your box contains and choose accordingly which of the two aircraft you will build first.
