This item is a masking set, that is, a set of self-adhesive masks cut to shape for covering the glazing and other areas while a model of the P-51D Mustang fighter in 1:48 scale is painted. It is not a kit of the aircraft and not a sheet of decals. The masks are made by the Czech brand AML and their point is to replace the slow hand cutting of crepe masking tape: the parts are lifted off the backing, laid on the glass and the canopy framing is sprayed. The resulting frame edges are sharp and even, which shows clearly on the bubble canopy of the Mustang, which has almost no dividing bars.
The P-51D was the most widespread version of the North American Mustang fighter. It is marked by a full bubble canopy with a lowered fuselage spine, armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing, and the license-built Packard Merlin V-1650 engine. Thanks to a large fuel load and drop tanks it was the typical long-range escort fighter, and it saw service over Europe and in the Pacific. Most machines flew in bare metal finish, which on a model places demands precisely on the cleanliness of the masking.
Degrease the glazing first and do not touch it with your fingers — grease reduces the adhesion of both the mask and the finish. Move the mask with tweezers, seat it in place and press the edge down with a toothpick or a wooden stick, so that no paint runs under it. Spray the interior shade of the frames first, and only then the exterior camouflage or metal base. Lay the paint on in thin coats; a heavy coat forms a step that peels off when the mask is lifted. Lift the masks as soon as the paint is dry to the touch — after it has fully cured the edges tear less cleanly. Remove any adhesive residue with a cotton bud damped in water.
