The station in Suffolk was home to one of the most successful fighter groups of the Eighth Air Force. It was the first of all of them to re-equip entirely with Mustangs and escorted bomber formations as far as Berlin, which no Allied fighter had managed until then. Its three squadrons carried the code pairs B6, G4 and C5 and from the spring of 1944 their aircraft appeared over the whole of central Europe.
The first machine has serial number 44-14519, the code pair B6, the individual letter R and the name Daisy Mae on the nose. The second is 44-14722, delivered in the tenth production series, with the code G4, the letter N and the name Temptation. Both therefore belonged to the same formation but to two different squadrons, which is told precisely by the pair of letters in front of the national insignia.
What decided was not agility but range. A laminar flow wing profile and drop tanks under it allowed the machine to stay with the bombers the whole way there and back. The D form added to that a bubble canopy with an all-round view, which pilots praised most of all the modifications.
Mustangs flew with no camouflage paint, in bare metal. The base therefore tends to be glossy in itself, but metallic finishes are porous. Coat them with clear varnish and let them dry for a day, otherwise the edges around the letters will give themselves away with a matte halo.
One small thing in closing that is easily forgotten: under the cockpit, commanders' examples often had rows of small victory markings. If the machine you have chosen carried them, add them only after the code letters have dried.
