About product

Hauler photo-etched set for the PMG-1 fire pumper in 1:48 scale

Photo-etched metal parts meant for detailing the plastic model of the Soviet PMG-1 motor fire pumper on the GAZ-AA chassis in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an aftermarket accessory for one particular Unimodels kit. With fire-fighting equipment the ratio of benefit to effort is exceptional with photo-etch: a large part of the vehicle is made up of an open body, ladders, grab handles, hose holders and mesh platforms, that is, shapes that plastic can never manage at the right thickness.

The real subject

The PMG-1 was a Soviet motor fire pumper built on the chassis of the GAZ-AA truck, the licensed version of the American Ford produced in the Soviet Union from the 1930s. The vehicle carried a pump, hoses and the necessary equipment, and with an open body for a crew of firefighters it became the standard fire appliance of towns and of industrial plants. It served in the Second World War as well, among other things in putting out the consequences of air raids, and remained in service long afterwards.

Building and painting tips

The most demanding and at the same time the most rewarding parts are the ladders and the mesh platforms: fit them only after the ground beneath has been painted, because spraying underneath them is difficult. Bend the metal along the etched line and straighten longer parts on glass, not between your fingers. Red paint is treacherous - it covers poorly and goes dark on a dark ground. So spray a light primer first, or a pink or orange intermediate tone, and only then the shade itself in several thin coats. A gloss varnish comes before the decals and the wash, and once that has dried a matte or semi-gloss varnish over the top, according to how worn you want the vehicle to look.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Soviet civilian and rear-area equipment
  • those interested in historic fire-fighting equipment
  • builders of dioramas with a town or factory scene in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to practice working with photo-etch on a striking vehicle

This is an accessory set, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory set; the base plastic kit has to be bought separately.

A Soviet motor fire pumper on the chassis of the GAZ-AA truck, common with town and factory brigades.

Over a light primer or a pink intermediate tone and in several thin coats. On a dark ground red goes dark and looks dirty.

Only after the ground beneath has been painted, because spraying underneath them is difficult and uncovered areas easily arise.
