About product

Serial numbers and national insignia 1938 to 1940 decals in 1:48 scale

A sheet of water-soaked decals from Kits-World in 1:48 scale. It is not a model and not a kit but an accessory applied to a finished and painted model. The theme of the sheet is the serial numbers and the national insignia used in the period from 1938 to 1940, that is before the war and in its first year. The make-up of the sheet, the number of markings and the ranges of sizes are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.

What a sheet like this is for

Universal marking sheets answer a situation a modeler often meets: there are decals in the box for only two or three machines and the modeler wants to build a particular aircraft that is not among them. A set of serial numbers and roundels makes it possible to put markings together from your own reference, or to add markings that are missing from the original sheet or damaged by age. The period from 1938 to 1940 is moreover specific in aircraft marking, because the form and the proportions of the roundels changed during it; before applying them, always compare the shape of the marking with period reference for the particular machine.

Application tips

With small elements such as individual letters and numerals, an accurate trim is the key. Cut the film as close to the print as possible so that no glossy rim appears once it is dry. Work on a glossy surface, soak the decal briefly and move it into place with a brush moistened with water, not with tweezers, so that it does not tear. Set out numerals and letters assembled into a line in advance and apply them one by one from the end; once they are dry, even the join out with a matte coat. On real machines serial numbers were often worn, so slight highlighting after application looks convincing.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers who build aircraft of the late 1930s and the start of the war
  • Those who put their own markings together from period reference
  • Builders whose original box is missing decals or has decals gone yellow with age
  • Modelers in 1:48 scale who work with small lettering

This is a separate decal sheet. The model, paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a decal sheet in 1:48 scale, which is applied to a model that has already been built and painted.

It is not tied to one type. It contains the markings used in the period from 1938 to 1940, so you put the markings together from your own reference.

The make-up of the sheet and the ranges of sizes are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet. The theme is serial numbers and roundels of the years 1938 to 1940.

For serial numbers and roundels, yes, and that is one of the main reasons universal sheets are bought. Personal markings and the emblems of a particular unit, however, are not to be looked for on it.
