The W-3 Sokol is a twin-engined multirole helicopter that originated in Poland and is often described as the first helicopter designed and developed entirely by the Polish aviation industry. It first flew at the end of the 1970s and has been in series production since the mid-1980s at PZL. It has a four-blade main rotor, a pair of turboshaft engines and a roomy cabin that holds roughly a dozen people. The W-3A designation belongs to the version certified to Western aviation regulations, which opened the way for the machines outside military service as well. The Sokol is used for transport, rescue, search and police duties, that is wherever the combination of two engines, good payload and a large cabin with big sliding doors comes in handy.
On a helicopter the extensive glazing lets you see considerably more of the cabin than on an aircraft, so finish and fit the interior before you close the fuselage, and reckon with the fact that it pays to add seat belts or small equipment. Mask the glazing carefully, ideally frame by frame, and glue it with a cement that leaves no milky haze. On models from smaller production runs it pays to try the parts dry and to reckon with sanding the mating surfaces to shape and possibly filling them. Leave the rotor head and the blades until the end, after the fuselage has been clear-coated. Police schemes tend to be high in contrast and glossy, so the surface has to be perfectly smooth before spraying. Apply the decals over gloss clear coat, settle them with decal softener and then unify the whole with a clear coat at the sheen you want.
