The accessory represents a water pump in a rustic form in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft but a separate diorama object meant to complete a finished scene. From the urban variant it differs in a simpler, coarser conception that matches a yard, a farm or a village green. In a diorama it works as a small thing that hints to the viewer where the scene is set.
A rustic pump belongs to the place people walk - at the corner of a building, by a fence, by a trough or by a group of figures. The surroundings tended to be muddy and uneven, so it pays to break the terrain around the foot up: trodden soil, a puddle, a tuft of grass where nobody treads. It is precisely the contrast of the wet and the dry surface that gives a scene depth, more than the casting itself. The accessory goes well with the other rustic elements of the same series, a wall or a well for instance.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry, cut the casting remains off with a fine saw and level the area with abrasive paper. Apply a thin primer before painting. With a rustic pump a combination of wood and metal suits: build the wooden parts up from a middle brown with a dark wash and fine drybrushing, and the metal parts, by contrast, from a dark base with discreet metallic highlighting of the edges. Stipple the rust with a fine brush in the places where water lingered - at the joints, under the handle, at the foot. Apply mud as a mixture of pigment and matte medium from the bottom upwards, never over the whole area, and let the original color show. Build the puddle from a clear gloss medium in two or three thin coats. Unify the whole with a matte varnish and bring the gloss back only to the surface of the water and to the places where water would run.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, terrain compounds and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
