An Armycast masking set for aircraft models in 1:48 scale. It makes it possible to spray a Soviet red star with a double, red and white outline in the variant designated as early. It is neither a model nor decals: the masks are applied to cured paintwork, the insignia is sprayed layer by layer and the masks are taken off.
A star with a double edging is a more complex pattern of Soviet aircraft marking — an inner red area, a narrow white band around it and, at the outside, a further thin red line. An insignia like that was demanding to execute on the real aircraft, and in scale it places high demands on accuracy. Armycast divides the range into an early, a mid and a late variant.
Before you stick the mask onto the model, reduce its tack. Stick it once or twice to the back of your hand or to a clean piece of glass and only then transfer it to the model. At full tack there is a risk that the mask will pull the camouflage finish away as it is removed, especially where the paint is laid over smooth gloss varnish with no undercoat. The risk grows with fresh finishes: give the paint at least a day or two, and with enamels rather longer. It also pays to make a test on an offcut of molded plastic painted by the same technique as the model — you will find out how the particular combination of paint and mask behaves without risking the finished piece.
