Dead Design 1:72 masks for the national insignia of the Aichi D3A2 with a white ring help you spray the ring at the same width around the whole perimeter.

A Dead Design set for spraying national insignia complemented by a white ring onto a model of the Aichi D3A2 in 1:72 scale. The set-off insignia was used where dark upper surfaces swallowed the red on its own and the aircraft needed to be recognizable from a greater distance.
The late Val carried a more powerful powerplant and a longer fuselage, thanks to which it kept usable performance even with a bomb load. The fixed landing gear with aerodynamic fairings stayed, however, and the speed fell noticeably short of the new types. The machines operated from island bases, where the change in Japanese markings caught up with them: the outline of the insignia was widened so that the aircraft would be recognizable against a green background and in poorer light as well.
The width of the white ring is the only thing the eye judges on this insignia as either symmetrical or spoiled. Work in two goes, therefore, and line the second mask up by the whole perimeter, not by one point. It helps to give yourself an extra day after spraying the white area, because a well-cured coat will not lift during the next masking. If a narrow spot does appear, it is usually better to spray the whole insignia over with camouflage and start again than to even it up with a brush.
