About product

A Montex masking set for the Spitfire Mk.I of the early version, scale 1:48

A set of die-cut painting masks for a model of the fighter Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I in the early rendering, in 1:48 scale. It is not a model or a kit but an aid for painting: the templates cover the glazing and other areas and are removed once the spraying is finished. The shapes are cut for the Tamiya kit.

Why the early version designation matters

The Spitfire Mk.I changed continuously during production. The early machines differ from the later ones among other things in the rendering of the propeller, in the shape of the canopy and in small details on the fuselage. For a masking set that is essential, because the spacing and the widths of the frames of the cabin need not be identical on the early and the later rendering. The templates therefore always belong to the rendering of the kit that is stated in the product name.

Usage tips - care of the clear parts

The glazing is the most sensitive part of a model and masks handle it a great deal. Before working, wash it in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry on a paper towel; never wipe it with a coarse cloth. Small scratches can be polished out by sanding gradually with very fine abrasives and finishing with polishing paste; dipping it in gloss varnish and drying it slowly in a dust-free place will help restore the transparency as well. Glue the part with a product intended for clear plastics; ordinary plastic cement will etch the surface and it can no longer be saved. Stick the masks on only onto a perfectly dry and degreased surface, and once they are off touch the glazing only by the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of the early versions of British fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want to preserve the transparency of the glazing and precise frames
  • Builders who care about the detail of the cabin
  • Owners of the kit in question looking for an accessory for painting it

The set of masks is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
