As soon as British fighters flew off to the Mediterranean and to North Africa, it turned out that fine sand could take an engine supercharger apart within a few dozen hours. The answer was a bulky intake filter under the nose, which added drag and cost the machine a few kilometers per hour, but kept it in service. The silhouette changed markedly: a squared-off belly appeared under the engine, by which the tropical version is recognized even from a distance. Over Malta these machines fought some of the hardest battles of the whole war in the spring of 1942.
The package offers shapes for the outer side of the glass. That means one round of application, one spraying and no turning the part over for the inner framing. The precision of the cut is the same as with the more extensive sets; only the scope differs.
Machines from the African squadrons carried a sand and brown pattern on the upper surfaces, with the paint quickly losing its depth by fading and being abraded by the sand on the leading edges. For a modeler that is a rewarding subject, because the surface takes a pronounced gradation of shades without looking overdone. The only things that stay sharp are the canopy frame and the outlines of the marking.
