Die-cut masks for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk VIII in 1:48 scale. They cover the cockpit glazing from both sides and carry the shapes of one set of national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mark VIII was the version Supermarine had planned from the moment the two-stage Merlin 60 series went into the airframe. A strengthened fuselage, a retractable tailwheel, a larger vertical tail and an intake filter built directly into the cowling made it a machine suited to dust and to humid heat alike. While the Mark IX was born as a quick stopgap, the Mk VIII was a considered solution. It served mainly over Italy, in Burma and with Australian squadrons over Darwin.
The package assumes that the canopy frames show from both sides. The inner surfaces had the cockpit shade, the outer ones continued the fuselage camouflage, and it is exactly the boundary between them that is most visible on a model. Pre-cut shapes keep that boundary sharp without scribing and without touching up with a brush.
The intake with the sand filter does not project from under the nose of the Mk VIII the way it does on the tropical Mk Vs, because it is recessed into the cowling. The silhouette thus stayed clean and the machine did not lose speed, as used to happen with the older modifications for desert service.
