About product

A Montex masking set for the Spitfire Mk.VIII in 1:48 scale

A set of precisely die-cut painting masks for a model of the fighter Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit or any part of a model but an accessory that is used during painting and removed once the spraying is finished. The masks are cut to the shape of the glazing of the Eduard kit.

Why masks instead of tape

The framing of a cabin can be masked with hand-cut tape as well, but on the Spitfire with its rounded canopy that is lengthy work and every millimeter of deviation shows on the finished model. A pre-cut mask has a shape derived from the particular part, so all you need do is transfer it into place and press it down. The material of the masks adapts to curves well and leaves no adhesive behind once it is removed, so the clear part does not have to be cleaned.

Usage tips

First wash the clear part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry; a mask will not hold on a greasy surface. Lift the templates out with tweezers or a pointed knife, and do not pull them by the corners, so that they do not stretch. Once they are stuck on, press the edges down properly with a toothpick - that is exactly where the paint creeps underneath. Spray the frames with the interior shade first and only then with the external coat, otherwise the frames would shine with the base color from the inside. Apply the paint in several very thin layers. Take the masks off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch but not yet perfectly cured; the edge is then at its sharpest.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of fighters in 1:48 scale who want cleanly painted framing of the cabin
  • Those who do not want to lose time cutting tape by hand
  • Builders who cannot manage to keep paint from running under tape
  • Everyone who already owns the kit in question and is looking for an accessory for it

The set of masks is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of painting masks, that is an aid for painting a kit you have already bought. The package contains neither the model nor its parts.

No. They are die-cut according to the shape of the glazing of the particular Eduard kit; on another model the shapes of the frames differ.

The extent of the set is stated on the packaging.

Best of all shortly after the paint has dried to the touch. On a perfectly cured finish the edge can break away and tear off a piece of the paint.
