At the Czech maker Hauler, SmartPack is a complete package of accessories put together for one particular kit in 1:48 scale, in this case for the StuG III Ausf.B from Tamiya. It is not a model nor a substitute for one: in the package you will find no plastic hull or gun but a set of parts that are fitted to a part-built or finished kit. Without it, then, you cannot use the set. SmartPack packages as a rule combine photo-etched sheet with other materials, so check the contents of the package and plan the build by it before you start gluing the hull.
The StuG III was a German assault gun of the Second World War period built on the chassis of the Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank. It carried the gun in a fixed superstructure with no rotating turret, which gave it a low silhouette but a limited traverse, so that aiming was done by turning the whole vehicle. The Ausf.B version belonged to the early batches of 1940 and 1941 and was armed with a short 7.5 cm gun meant above all for firing on field fortifications and targets in the open. A long barrel and the role of a tank destroyer came only with the later production versions, so the early machines have a markedly different look to the front of the superstructure.
With accessories of this type the preparation decides everything. First degrease the photo-etched sheet with warm water and detergent or with a spirit cleaner, or a primer will not hold on the smooth metal. Cut the parts off with a scalpel against a hard surface, not with nippers, which deform the edge. A simple bender suits the bends, or at least two blades and a ruler; it is always bent against the marked line. Stiffer brass can be warmed briefly before bending, so that it softens and does not crack. It is glued with thin super glue applied with a pin, never straight from the tube onto the part. Before painting, spray a primer that unifies the metal with the plastic, and only then apply the base shade.
This is a set of accessories, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
