This is a set of pre-cut masking templates for a model of the Sukhoi Su-27S fighter in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. It is not a model of an aircraft nor part of one, but an aid for painting. The masks are die-cut from thin kabuki paper, which conforms well to the curved shape of a canopy, holds on the edge of a frame and comes away after spraying with no adhesive residue. The name of the set does not include the designation TFace, so this is the basic release aimed at the outer side of the glazing. Photo-etched sets and accessory packages for the same aircraft are issued under the same name, but here you are buying masking templates only.
The Su-27S is the single-seat production version of the twin-engine fighter from the Sukhoi design bureau, brought into service in the first half of the 1980s. The aircraft has an integral aerodynamic arrangement in which the fuselage contributes to lift as well, two engines in separate nacelles and a large fuel supply for long range. The cockpit is covered by a large canopy with a long smooth curve and only a few frames. Glazing like that is the hardest of all to mask with tape, because a straight strip will not lie into a curve without creases.
First degrease the glazing and let it dry completely. Lift the mask off the sheet with a sharp scalpel, place it in the middle of the panel and squeeze it out toward the frame, so that no air is left under it. Then press the edges down with a toothpick or a blunt wooden stick, because paint almost always bleeds only on an edge that has not been pressed down. Cover the remaining areas with a piece of ordinary masking tape. Spray several light layers; one heavy one will create a visible step at the edge. Remove the masks as soon as the paint has set; once it has fully cured the rim of paint separates less well and may peel off.
It is not a model of an aircraft, but an accessory for one. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
