A masking set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft and not parts of it, but an aid for painting: the precut templates are stuck onto the places that are to stay free of the spray, the surface is sprayed and, once they are taken off, a sharp transition remains with no paint running under. Working with templates is quicker and cleaner than masking with tape cut by hand, especially on the rounded frames of a cabin. The set is tied to a particular model of the Su-33 in 1:48 scale — the shapes of the templates match the shapes of the parts, so check the match with your kit before buying.
The Su-33 is the carrier-based variant of the heavy twin-engined fighter derived from the Su-27 family. It differs from the land version by strengthened landing gear, an arrestor hook, folding wing panels to save room on deck and added auxiliary surfaces in the forward part of the fuselage. The design is adapted to operation from an aircraft carrier, that is, a takeoff along a ski-jump deck and a landing onto arrestor wires.
Before sticking, the surface must be dry, degreased and free of dust. Transfer the templates with tweezers and press them down with a wooden stick or a toothpick, above all around the perimeter, so that paint does not run under the edge. Spray in thin layers and rather several times over — a heavy wet layer runs under most often. Take the templates off while the paint is only tacky, not after it has cured completely; a dried film likes to tear away at the edge together with the paint. Under the glazing it pays to spray the interior shade of the frames first and only then the outer camouflage.
