About product

1:48 Supermarine Walrus Mk.I – masking stencils for spraying

This set from the manufacturer SX-Art holds self-adhesive stencils for spraying the camouflage scheme on a model of the Supermarine Walrus Mk.I amphibian aircraft in 1:48 scale. The stencils are applied to a painted surface and serve to define the shapes that are airbrushed. They are not masks for covering the glazing.

The real subject

The Supermarine Walrus was a British single-engine amphibian biplane with a boat hull and retractable landing gear. The engine was mounted between the flying surfaces in a pusher arrangement, that is with the propeller behind it. The machines served for reconnaissance from the decks of warships, from which they were launched by catapult, and later above all for rescuing the crews of aircraft shot down at sea.

Camouflage on an intricate machine

The Walrus is a thankless subject for masking: a boat hull, two flying surfaces, struts, floats and a pusher engine nacelle. Masking a shape like that by hand with tape takes longer than the whole rest of the build, and the edge still comes out differently on each side. A stencil solves both problems. Paint the surface, let it cure and apply the stencils to the parts if possible before you fit the struts between them — once the biplane is assembled some places are out of reach. Press with a soft tool around the perimeter and with particular care where the film ends at the edge of a surface. British Second World War schemes generally have a fairly sharp transition, so keep the stencil pressed down and spray perpendicular. After spraying, lift the film off before the paint cures completely, and then unify the edge with clear before the decals.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British Second World War aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who do not want to mask a biplane with tape
  • airbrush users who require an identical edge on both sides
  • those who build naval and amphibian subjects

This is a building accessory, not a model. Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

On the parts, before the biplane is finally glued together. Between the struts and the flying surfaces some places cannot be reached with an airbrush or even with a finger.

With British Second World War schemes, generally fairly sharp. So keep the stencil pressed down firmly and spray perpendicular to the edge.

They are not. The product consists of masking stencils for spraying paint; decals are sold separately.
