The model captures the two-seat training conversion of the Yak-23, that is a machine of the first postwar generation of jet fighters. The kit comes from the maker A and A Models, which has long devoted itself to the less usual and prototype types that the large makers do not reach. That is precisely why the two-seat Yak-23 is interesting for a collector: in 1:48 scale it is a subject you will not meet commonly. As with short-run molds, count on the parts needing more cleaning up and dry fitting than with mass-produced kits.
The Yakovlev Yak-23 was a single-seat jet fighter with a straight wing and a short fuselage from which the exhaust emerged under the rear section; the tail surfaces were carried by a boom running out above the exhaust. It was powered by a centrifugal engine derived from a British design, and the machine was among the structurally simple and light types of its day. It entered service at the end of the 1940s and besides the Soviet Union it was used by other states of central and southeastern Europe. The two-seat training conversion came about in only small numbers, and that by the conversion of single-seat machines; the instructor's cockpit was placed behind the student's.
With a short-run mold it pays to try fitting all the parts together dry first and only then to reach for the glue. Cut the remains of the sprue gates off with nippers and sand the surfaces down; count on filling and sanding the joints. Finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage, as on the two-seat version more is visible inside than on the single-seat one. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals and let it cure thoroughly, or silvery edges will arise. Natural metal surfaces call for a perfectly smooth base, so allow time for sanding and polishing the base coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
