Fire control and electronic warfare antennas in 1:700 scale from FineMolds is an injection-molded accessory set for models of modern warships, above all those of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of small injection-molded plastic parts for models of modern warships in 1:700 scale, so an accessory and not a model of a ship. It contains the illuminating antennas of fire control systems and the radomes of electronic warfare equipment of the kind carried by the surface ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and by other modern vessels of the same generation. Represented are the illuminating radars of a surface-to-air missile system, the Japanese fire control system designated FCS-2 with its characteristic spherical radome, and the radomes of the NOLQ-3D electronic warfare equipment. The parts are molded in gray plastic, so they are glued with ordinary cement for plastic and call for none of the handling that resin or photo-etched parts need.
A fire control radar illuminates an air target so that a semi-active radar homing surface-to-air missile can home on it; its spherical or dish-shaped radome is among the most conspicuous elements of the superstructures of modern ships. Electronic warfare equipment, by contrast, does not fire but picks up and jams an opponent's emissions, and its antennas tend to be hidden in angular radomes on the masts and the sides of the superstructure. It is precisely the shape and the arrangement of these antennas that distinguishes individual classes of ship and their states of modernization, which is why it pays to replace the simplified parts from an ordinary kit.
The parts are very small, so cut them out with a sharp knife at the gate and work over a bounded tray. Before gluing, clean the place on the mast or the superstructure of the original part and check against a photograph of the particular ship how many antennas belong where, because the fit differs from ship to ship. They can be painted while still on the sprue: a thin primer, then the light gray deck shade. Radomes tend to be matte, while the radar faces should be brought out with a darker tone. A light wash and fine drybrushing give the shapes depth without emphasizing lines that do not belong.
The set is supplied unpainted and without the base kit of the ship. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
