A precisely cut sheet of real wood veneer that will replace the plastic deck of a model of the British light cruiser HMS Galatea in 1:700 scale. The parts are laser-cut to the shape of the deck and fitted with an adhesive layer, so they are laid straight onto a prepared plastic surface. It is not a kit of the ship but an accessory for a modeler who already has the basic model.
A plastic deck always has to be painted, and the drawing of the planking is laboriously created on it with a pencil, a wash or a dry brush. Veneer has its own natural texture and color irregularity, which paint cannot imitate, and in 1:700 scale it creates the contrast between warm wood and the gray steel of the superstructures at first glance. The masking of the deck areas while the hull is sprayed also falls away.
Paint the hull and the superstructures before you lay the deck. Try each part dry first and fine-tune it with a file or fine sandpaper, and only then peel the backing paper off, because once the veneer is stuck down it will not move. Lay it from the largest part toward the edges and press it down with a soft stick, not with your fingers, so that no grease is pressed into the surface. The shade can be fine-tuned with a very dilute oil wash or with a wood stain, and it is good to unify the surface at the end with a matte clear coat, which also protects the wood from getting dirty. Mark the openings for the parts above deck before gluing.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
