About product

HMS Prince of Wales, as in December 1941, 1:700 (Flyhawk, limited edition)

A plastic kit of the British battleship HMS Prince of Wales in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Flyhawk, released as a limited edition. The figure in the name refers to the configuration of the ship from December 1941, that is, to a specific state of the superstructures, the radars and the light armament. On large warships of that time the fit changed practically from month to month, which is why the date is given right in the name; it is not an extra detail but the determination of the specific form of the model.

The real subject

The Prince of Wales belonged to the King George V class, to the British battleships designed in the period between the world wars under the international treaty limits of the time. The main armament consisted of ten 356 mm guns divided into two quadruple turrets and one twin turret, supplemented by 133 mm dual-purpose guns and light anti-aircraft armament, which was strengthened during her service. The ship entered service in 1941 and her fit was added to continuously during her short active career, including the radars, whose arrangement is the key to dating the specific form of the ship.

Building and painting tips

Ship models in 1:700 scale rest on work with very tiny parts. Have a sharp knife and good tweezers ready and work over a mat from which a lost part can be fished out. It proves useful to build in subassemblies and to paint the superstructures, the funnels and the guns separately before the final assembly, because once they are glued neither a brush nor an airbrush nozzle will get in between them. Lay the paint on in thin coats, so that the engraving and the texture of the decks stay legible. A fine wash will pick out the articulation of the superstructures, but at this scale less is more, as exaggerated weathering quickly dirties a model. Bond any photo-etched parts with a minimal amount of super glue and only at the end, so that they do not get bent during handling. For transport and display it pays to fix the model to a firm base from the start.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of warships in 1:700 scale.
  • For modelers with experience of tiny parts and accurate assembly.
  • For those interested in British battleships of interwar design.
  • For builders who want a model corresponding to a specific date, not to the general form of the ship.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It determines the configuration of the ship, that is, the state of the superstructures, the radars and the light armament as of December 1941. On ships of that time the fit changed very fast, which is why the date is given.

What decides is the parts list in the instructions enclosed with the kit.

Rather not. In 1:700 scale the parts are very small and the assembly calls for tweezers, a sharp knife and patience. We recommend it to modelers with practice.

The form of the hull depends on the contents of the specific kit. Please check the instructions, or ask before ordering.
