A plastic kit of the Japanese light cruiser Kuma in her state of 1942, in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread in ship modeling: models in it stay reasonably large even with heavy units and they can be built as a coherent collection.
Kuma was the prototype ship of the class of the same name of light cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy, completed at the beginning of the 1920s. They were fast ships with a long slender hull, a characteristic three-funnel silhouette, a main armament of 140 mm caliber and a strong torpedo armament. In service they filled the role of leaders of destroyer flotillas above all, and later they were used for escort and transport duties. Over the course of the war the light anti-aircraft armament of the units of this class was gradually strengthened and the fittings of the superstructures were modified.
A small scale forgives less than it seems: the basis is clean removal of flash from the parts, thin coats of paint and the engraved pattern of the deck kept intact. Ship models in this scale are built either with a full hull on a stand or in the waterline form on the surface of a diorama; think the way of displaying it over before you glue the hull. Unify the gray finish of the hull and the superstructures with an airbrush, set the planked areas of the deck apart with a tone toward brown and accentuate the whole with a heavily thinned wash into the engraving. Railings, mast fittings and cranes are a rewarding place for photo-etched accessories in 1:700, and thin rigging can be imitated with stretched monofilament line.
