About product

The light cruiser Sakawa in 1:700 scale from Fujimi

An injection-molded plastic kit of a warship in the usual collector's scale of 1:700. The manufacturer is the Japanese firm Fujimi, whose ranges of Imperial Japanese Navy ships in this scale are among the most extensive on the market. The subject is Sakawa, the last completed unit of the Agano class, so the model fittingly rounds out her sister ships of the same class in a single cabinet. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the way the hull is divided are stated on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

Sakawa was one of the Agano class light cruisers, which the Imperial Japanese Navy built as flotilla leaders for destroyer squadrons. The design combined high speed, medium-caliber gun armament in twin turrets and torpedo armament. Sakawa was completed only at the very end of the war, when large surface operations had practically ceased, so her combat employment was limited. She survived the war and in the postwar years ended up as a target ship in trials in the Pacific. That is exactly why she is a rewarding subject among ship modelers, one that differs from her sister ships both in fate and in late appearance.

Building and painting tips

Start by deciding whether you will build the model on a stand or on a water surface, because that will determine how the hull is prepared. Apply the base shade with an airbrush, set the deck areas apart and then even the whole thing out with a dark wash that brings out the engraved lines. Glue the masts, the gun barrels and other thin parts with cyanoacrylate glue, and on plastic use thin cement applied with a fine brush instead. Photo-etched railings and ladders are among the accessories that change the final impression the most at this scale. Bring out the small anti-aircraft armament with a dry brush in a slightly lighter shade.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Japanese light cruisers in 1:700 scale.
  • For modelers putting the whole Agano class together in one cabinet.
  • For builders interested in less usual ship histories.
  • For intermediate modelers who can handle work with small parts.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

She was a light cruiser of the Agano class, a relatively young design conceived as a flotilla leader for destroyer squadrons. Sakawa was the last of this class to be completed.

The name does not give a particular year. The exact version is stated on the box and in the instructions.

Both arrangements occur among Fujimi ships in 1:700 scale. The particular variant is stated on the box.

Photo-etched railings and ladders change the result the most, then a stand and possibly a dark wash to bring out the engraved detail.
