The Artwox Model 1:700 wooden deck for the Chinese cruiser Ching Yuen is an accessory to a plastic kit. A cut self-adhesive veneer will replace an engraved plastic deck with real wood.

This item is an aftermarket accessory, not a model of the ship. Artwox Model supplies deck parts cut from thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks marked on it; the back carries a self-adhesive layer. Once glued onto the plastic deck, the model gains the texture and the color irregularity of real wood, which neither spraying nor engraving can imitate. The particular kit the deck is cut for is given in the name of the product.
The Ching Yuen was among the protected cruisers of British build taken into the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. It was a fast type of ship with an armored deck protecting the engine and boiler rooms, with medium-caliber guns and light quick-firing armament. The fleet she was part of was deployed in the Sino-Japanese War in the years 1894 and 1895; cruisers of this type formed its more mobile element alongside the heavy ironclads. A laid wooden deck is characteristic of the ships of this generation.
Most of the work goes on getting around the superstructures, the funnels and the gun bases. Before you remove the film, lay the part on and mark on the plastic with a pencil or a fine scriber where it should line up. If the veneer overhangs anywhere by a hair, trim it only once it is glued on, with a new blade guided perpendicular to the surface; a blunt blade does not tear wood cleanly and frays the grain. Small gaps by the superstructures can be hidden with a thin line of dark wash, which at the same time brings out the gaps between the planks.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
